M60/M60E3 machine gun
The M60 was developed from two World War II-era German weapons--the MG 42 and the FG 42. The US Army adopted the M60 in the late 1950s, and it served as a general-purpose machine gun--bipod-mounted as a squad's automatic weapon, or tripod-automatic as the company support gun. The M60 fires only in automatic mode, but the cyclic rate is low enough for an inexperienced soldier to fire off single rounds. Numerous modifications were made to the M60 in the early years of its infantry service, and it was fitted to vehicles and helicopters.
The M60 is a heavy gun, and in the 1980s the US forces requested a lighter version for use by rapid intervention troops and light infantry. The M60E3 was developed to fill these requirements. The changes from the M60 are the fitting of a lightweight barrel, the addition of a light bipod, a carrying handle attached to the barrel, a forward hand grip for firing from the hip or shoulder and some improvements to the feed and gas systems.
Five versions of the weapon are distinguished by separate designations. In addition to the basic M60 and M60E3 infantry weapon is the M60E2 (armor weapon for internal mounting in armored fighting vehicles); M60C (remotely fired, for external mounting on helicopters) and M60D (a helicopter and vehicle weapon, mounted in helicopter doorways and vehicle platforms).
